What about the unpardonable sin?  What is it?

The scriptures teach that there is a sin that is unpardonable (Mark 3:28-29). The scriptures also say that He will forgive “all sin” (1 John 1:7). How can this be? All sin is forgiven when the sinner comes God’s way—confesses and repents. Whoever has committed the unpardonable sin, will not come God’s way.

When we understand that we have sinned, and we then repent, He then forgives (Acts 3:19, 2 Corinthians 7:10).  1 John 1:7 says, “If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” Notice that we must be walking in the “light” to be cleansed from all sin. Our goal should be to walk in the “light” – in all the truth we have. The blood of Jesus will then work for us to cleanse us from “all sin”.

But what if we have spoken badly of the Holy Spirit – blasphemed the Holy Spirit? Can we repent and be forgiven? Can we begin to walk in the light? If you have truly blasphemed the Holy Spirit, it’s my understanding that you will not want to repent or walk in the light. If you truly desire to be saved – to be saved God’s way – I believe you can. If you truly desire to be saved God’s way, that’s a good sign that you’ve not blasphemed the Holy Spirit.

To blaspheme means to, “speak evil of”. To speak evil of the Holy Spirit is the unpardonable sin (Mark 3:28-29). As with any other sin, for there to be guilt the sin must be committed with knowledge and defiance. When a person has knowledge of the truth, and is in determined opposition to the truth, it is sin. The Holy Spirit is God’s means of bringing the truth—the way of the cross—to the world. To have understanding of this truth and to oppose the Holy Spirit is a most grievous sin.

We have all opposed God. That’s why the “cross” was necessary. Many have even opposed the Holy Spirit and His bringing “the way of the cross” to mankind. Consider the Apostle Paul. He greatly opposed God’s way. Persecuting, imprisoning, and consenting to the death of Christians (Acts 22:19-21). Yet he did what he did in ignorance (1 Timothy 1:12-13). When he received the truth, he became a great proponent of the truth. Although he was a blasphemer, he did it in ignorance, therefore he had not committed the unpardonable sin.

Could it be that only those who have been saved, only those who have known “the way of the cross”, could then with understanding commit the unpardonable sin? To know God’s great plan – the way of the cross – and then to oppose it, has to be a most grievous sin.

There are those, who because of some idle thought or word, think that they have blasphemed the Holy Spirit. They think that they have committed the unpardonable sin. Satan, our adversary, very probably has assured them of such. They may never shake loose from his lies. A better understanding of God’s way may have saved them from such a trap.

Know this, that God loves you. He suffered greatly, so that you could be saved. If you want to be saved and are willing to come His way, you can. Faith in the work that Jesus did on the cross and true repentance will save “whosoever”.
